History and Background

CRIA was constituted on 1 July 2010 as a statutory corporation and as a NSW Government agency by the Transport Administration Act 1988 (NSW) (as amended).

CRIA was established to replace the role and functions previously undertaken by the State Owned Corporation, Rail Infrastructure Corporation (RIC). CRIA is to be taken for all purposes as a continuation of, and the same legal entity, as RIC.

RIC had been established on 1 January, 2001 as a statutory State Owned Corporation and given overall management responsibility for the NSW rail network.

In January 2004, as part of the reform to NSW rail, the metropolitan system responsibilities were transferred to the newly created Rail Corporation New South Wales (RailCorp).

In September 2004 the NSW rail system was separated into three networks:

  • Metropolitan Network, owned and managed by RailCorp;
  • Leased Network (NSW Interstate and Hunter Valley Networks), owned by CRIA and leased to and managed by ARTC; and
  • Country Regional Network (CRN), owned by CRIA and managed by our contracted rail infrastructure manager, JHR.
